There are about 38,000 known mushroom species, out of which only 100 species are cultivated commercially, and around 270
species are discovered to have medicinal properties. Since the early 20th century, mushrooms have been widely used in modern
pharmaceuticals (e.g., penicillin). But still, scientific progress towards understanding medicinal mushrooms may be just the tip of
the iceberg.
Medicinal mushrooms generally possess a large amount of beta-glucan, which is found to help stimulate the immune system and
offer a wide range of other therapeutic effects(e.g., anti-cancer, anti-diabetic). Therefore, it has gained popularity in multiple

Note: 1) Chaga is wild harvested in Russia, others are indoor cultivated in Zhejiang and Anhui provinces in China; 100%

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), also named as “mushroom of immortality”, is believed to
prolong life. It was recorded in a classic herbal book, Shen Nong Ben Cao (a Chinese
medicinal guidance book) dated back to about 200 AD.
The basidiocarp, mycelium and spores of Reishi contain approximately 400 different
bioactive compounds, including triterpenoids, polysaccharides, nucleotides, sterols,
steroids, fatty acids, proteins, peptides and trace elements. [2] Researchers have been
focusing on two primary active components, namely polysaccharides and triterpenes.
Medicinal indications: Many studies have recognized the immunomodulation properties of Reish. One human trial shows that
Reishi enhances lymphoid cell number and functions in various lymphoid immune deficiencies among children. [3] Moreover,
Reishi has exhibited anti-tumor properties. It was found that combining Reishi with chemotherapeutic agents improves the
quality of life and therapeutic outcomes for cancer patients. [4] Though it remains unclear whether Reishi helps prolong long-term
cancer survival. Further, Reishi’s antidiabetic properties have been demonstrated in a human trial, which showed that it is
efficacious and safe in lowering blood glucose concentrations. [5]
Prolonging sleep time is also one of Reishi’s research areas. This indication is supported by evidence from an animal study. [6] In
addition, there are some promising study results showing Reishi has other medicinal properties, such as cardiovascular disease,
longevity. [7] [8]
 
 

Lion’s mane(Hericium erinaceus), known in Japan as “the priest from the mountains,” was
artificially cultivated in China in 1988 for the first time. This mushroom is highly popular
among Buddhist monks who take Lion's Mane regularly to enhance focus in meditation. In
China, Lion’s mane has gained several approved patents by China Food and Drug
Administration (CFDA) and it is widely marketed as healthcare products.
The mostly researched bioactive compounds of Lion’s mane are Hericerin,
Erinacines, Erinacerin, Glycoprotein, Polysaccharides, Sterols, Vitamin B12[c-lactone].
Medicinal indications: Lion’s mane has recorded therapeutic effects on fortifying the spleen and nourishing the stomach,
tranquilizing the mind, and fighting cancer. In modern science, Lion’s mane has been extensively studied in the effect of
stimulating nerve growth factor (NGF) within brain. A human study in Japan demonstrated that Lion’s mane is effective in
improving mild cognitive impairment. [9] Another human study shows its efficacy in treating patients with dementia by retarding
disease progression. [10] Thus, Lion’s mane has gained considerable attention in the potential drug development for treating
Alzheimer's and Parkinson.
A few animal studies have indicated that Lion’s mane has crucial role in gastroprotective activity, such as gastric mucosa
protection. [11]

 

Cordyceps sinensis, also described as "summer grass, winter worm” in China, are mostly
found in high mountains with an altitude of 3000 to 5000 in the Himalayan region.
However, due to the scarcity, the price of Cordyceps sinensis is too high for the mass
market. Thus, cordyceps militaris, as a more affordable species of Cordyceps, is
discovered to be cultivated in a controlled environment.
Cordyceps militaris contains abundant amino acids, namely lysine, glutamic acid, proline
and threonine. It’s also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. The
bioactive components adenosine, cordycepin, ergothioneine and cordycepic acid (D
mannitol) are present in Cordyceps militaris.
Medicinal indications: Cordyceps militaris is widely acknowledged as an energy booster, enhancing endurance and stamina. The
results shown in both human and animal trials indicate that supplementing Cordyceps militaris improves tolerance to high
intensity exercise and has anti-fatigue effect. [12] [13] Thus, many athletes consume Cordyceps militaris on a regular basis. Besides,
it is worth mentioning that Cordyceps militaris may benefit sexual impotence. Though only animal studies are currently available
to back up the effect of enhancing male fertility.[14]
The indication of immunity boosting was supported in a human trial. In the study, Cordyceps militaris enhances cell-mediated
immunity of healthy male adults. [15] Furthermore, Cordyceps militaris potentially have other benefits, such as anti-diabetic, anti
tumor, anti-oxidative, and anti-aging effects. [16]
 
 

Since the 12th century, Shiitake(Lentinula edodes) has been reported that it was cultivated
in China. Now Shiitake is the second most popular edible mushroom globally and being
cultivated worldwide.
Shiitake provides a low lipid content, high fiber content, and has a considerable amount of
proteins; it also contains B vitamins and minerals. Additionally, Shiitake has a variety of
bioactive components, including polysaccharides, polysaccharopeptides, lectins, and
secondary metabolites (e.g., lentinan, a β-(1-3)-glucan ).[17] It is also a good source of
natural Vitamin D2 when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Medicinal indications: It is widely studied, particularly in Asia, that Shiitake modulates the immune system. [18] A human study
observed the changes of cytokine and serum CRP levels after participants consumed Shiitake mushrooms. The result suggests
that Shiitake intake leads to less inflammation. [19] In Japan, Lentinan( i.e., the backbone of β-(1, 3)-glucan with β-(1, 6) branches)
derived from Shiitake mushrooms have been approved to be used as a biological response modifier in gastric cancer
treatment. [20] Besides, researchers have indicated the antitumor properties of Shiitake mushroom for other cancers, such as
colon cancer. [21] Moreover, Shiitake is found to modulate cholesterol and prevent blood pressure increase in hypertension. [22]
UV-irradiated Shiitake mushroom is rich in Vitamin D2. An animal study shows vitamin D2-fortified Shiitake mushroom helps to
retard bone loss and further indicates the potential benefits for postmenopausal women.[23] In addition, Se-enriched Shiitake
mushroom is also being researched and it may potentially to be a natural source of dietary Se. [24]

 

 

Chaga(Inonotus obliquus) has been used as a traditional folk medicine in cold climate countries
like Russia, Poland, and Baltic countries since the 16th century. It merely grows as a rock-hard
excrescence on birch trees. Traditionally, Chaga is served as tea to drink.
Chaga is reported to have more than 20 different kinds of bioactive components, such as
triterpenoids, inotodiol, trametenolic acids, and lanosterol.[25]
Medicinal indications: Antioxidant activity is the most studied theme in the research of Chaga mushrooms. It’s worth mentioning that
Chaga shows the strongest antioxidant activity when compared with other medicinal mushrooms (Agaricus blazei Mycelia,
Ganoderma lucidum and Phellinus linteus).[26] Chaga has exhibited high capacity to scavenge free radicals in vitro research, more
specifically, its polyphenolic extract helps to protect cells against oxidative stress.[27]
Chaga's other bioactivities, such as antiviral, antibacterial, immunostimulating, and anti-tumor activities have gained substantial
evidence in vivo and vitro studies.[28] However, most of these studies are performed in animals and cellular models, which might not
obtain the same results in humans.[29]
 
 

Turkey tail(Trametes versicolor) grows on dead and dying trees throughout the world in many
diverse climates. It has been used as traditional Asian medicine for thousands of years.
Japanese discovered Turkey tail’s immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharide peptides in
1965.
Today, PSK (polysaccharide-K) and PSP (polysaccharide-peptide) are the two main bioactive
compounds utilized for their medicinal properties. PSK was first isolated in Japan in the late
1960s and PSP was first isolated in China around 1983.
Medicinal indications: Turkey tail has been extensively studied in the field of cancer treatment. Clinical trials of Krestin (PSK) in
cancer began in the 1970s in Japan. Shortly in 1977, Krestin (PSK) was approved as a cancer therapy by the Japanese National
Health Registry. Furthermore, another compound, PSP was subjected to Phase II and Phase III trials in China.[30] Among peer
reviewed publications on Turkey tail in cancer treatment, 43 studies have conducted human clinical trials and indicate positive
impact on cancer treatment of gastrointestinal, breast, and lung cancer, in terms of mitigating chemotherapy side effect,
increasing survival rate, and improving overall quality of life. [31] [32] [33]
Turkey tail also displays beneficial effects on gut microbiome shown in a human trial, in which it acts as a prebiotic( i.e., nourish
beneficial bacteria ) to modulate human intestinal microbiome composition. Therefore, Turkey tail may contribute to digestion
system.[34]
 
 

Maitake(Grifola frondosa), also called dancing mushroom in Japan, is said that people dance
with joy when harvesting it. Maitake has been commercially cultivated since 1980 in Japan
and elsewhere. Maitake can grow up to 45 kilograms (100 pounds), thus, earned the name
"king of mushrooms".
Maitake is a good source of protein, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol)
and minerals (i.e., potassium, phosphate, sodium, calcium, magnesium).
Medicinal indications: Because of the polysaccharide content, D-Fraction in particular, Maitake appears to enhance the immune
system. One human study indicates that Maitake activates NK cells in cancer patients.[35] Whereas another human study shows
Maitake has immunomodulatory effects, meaning it suppresses as well as enhances immune among different people.[36] Further,
researchers also investigated the anti-cancer effect. Various studies of animals and humans have shown that supplementing Maitake
has therapeutic effects on leukemia, stomach cancer, and brain cancer patients.[37]
Research on HIV patients also reveals that D-Fraction derived from Maitake has a positive impact on easing symptoms and
secondary diseases.[38] Moreover, studies have shown other bioactivities of Maitake, such as anti-diabetic, anti-hepatitis,
hypertension. [39] [40] [41]
 
 
 

Oyster mushrooms(Pleurotus ostreatus) were first officially documented in 1775 by a Dutch
naturalist and were first cultivated in Germany as a subsistence during World War. Oyster
mushrooms have different colors, such as Pearl Oyster, Blue Oyster, Golden Oyster, and
Pink Oyster.
Oyster mushrooms provide dietary fiber, proteins, beta-glucan, some minerals (i.e.,
calcium, phosphate, iron, potassium and sodium) and vitamin C, B-complex (thiamine,
riboflavin, folic acid and niacin).[42] It also contains all the essential amino acids.[43]
Medicinal indications: Bioactive substances of Oyster mushrooms, namely, β-glucans, peptides and proteins, are increasingly
studied for their health-promoting effects. While most researches were conducted in vitro or in vivo experiments on animals, with
few clinical trials on humans. [44] It has shown that β-glucans derived from Oyster mushrooms stimulate immunocompetent cells in
mice and further decrease tumor size and increase the survival rate.[45] In addition, antibiotic effects of Oyster mushrooms have
been demonstrated when athletes supplemented β-glucan and they had better infections recovery from the respiratory tract. [46]
In the commercial market, Oyster mushrooms have been successfully adopted in medicine development due to the cholesterol
modulating effect. [47] The medicine for lowing cholesterol named Lovastatin is the first statin drug approved by FDA. In addition,
Oyster mushrooms indicate anti-diabetic properties in a human study that participants showed less serum glucose levels after
consuming Oyster mushrooms. [48]
 
 
Note:
Up to now, there is no EFSA approved health claims for medicinal mushrooms. A few health claims of medicinal mushrooms
were summited and recorded, for example, Reishi has immune support function and oyster mushroom has antioxidant
properties. [52]

3) RDA for medicinal mushrooms is not determined by EFSA yet. The recommended dosage depends on the form of
medicinal mushrooms, namely extract or powder. Dosage needs to take concentrations into account. General speaking,
disease-prevention doses in clinical studies may be up to 1.5g-3g daily and the dosage for food supplement may vary
from 500 mg to 1500 mg. [50]

As a country with a long tradition of medicinal mushrooms, China has the most varieties and ancient cultivation techniques, as well as time-tested medicinal knowledge. Wanna a glimpse of medicinal mushroom overview behind the scene?

Mushrooms are super intelligent. They find the most pristine environment to flourish. In this sense, provinces like Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui are known for their clean, green, humid, biodiverse environments thanks to their surrounding forests. Thus, most manufacturers of medicinal mushrooms concentrate in these three provinces(except Chaga being wild-harvested in cold climate countries).

As medicinal mushrooms grow indoors (or greenhouse), growers can harvest them all year around. It also assures sufficient and sustainable supply throughout the year. After harvesting, mushrooms are dried(active ingredients are densified) before starting production(and extraction).  

Polysaccharides and Beta-glucan are the main active ingredients widely studied in the space of medicinal mushrooms. This requires water extraction technique. Other active ingredients, such as Triterpene, Cordycepin, Cordycepic Acid, Adenosine, need dual extraction(water and ethanol) to harness the goodies of the full spectrum.
